“How Peter Obi Betrayed Me,” Kenneth Okonkwo Opens Up In Explosive Interview

Abuja, Nigeria – Saturday , 14 June 2025 | 10:45 AM (WAT)

Nollywood veteran and Labour Party chieftain, Barr. Kenneth Okonkwo, has sparked heated political discourse after revealing details of what he describes as a “betrayal” by former presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi. In a candid and trending interview that aired on Thursday evening, Okonkwo accused Obi of sidelining committed party members and abandoning core ideals that once unified the Labour Party’s movement ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The interview, which has since gone viral across social media platforms, was aired on a popular political talk show, The Frontline, hosted on Arise TV.

Speaking with visible emotion and disappointment, Okonkwo expressed regret over how he was allegedly treated by Obi and his close associates after investing his credibility, time, and personal resources in the 2023 presidential campaign.

“Peter Obi used people like me to sell his candidacy to Nigerians. I stood by him when no one else believed in the movement. But after the elections, he distanced himself from those of us who gave everything to the cause,” he said.

Okonkwo alleged that rather than consolidating the momentum built during the campaign, Obi began surrounding himself with “new allies” while ignoring loyal supporters who had risked their reputation to support his candidacy.

The revelation adds to growing concerns over internal discontent within the Labour Party. Multiple sources confirm that several grassroots members and mid-level party officials have become increasingly frustrated with the perceived lack of inclusivity in decision-making post-election.

Okonkwo also hinted that Obi may have compromised on some of the Labour Party’s founding principles in the aftermath of the 2023 elections, raising doubts about the former Anambra governor’s political direction ahead of 2027.

“The Labour Party stood for a new Nigeria—transparency, youth inclusion, and justice. But we are seeing signs of the old politics creeping back in,” he lamented.

As of the time of this report, Mr. Peter Obi has not issued an official response to Okonkwo’s statements. However, sources close to Obi’s media team hinted that a public clarification may be released in the coming days.

A spokesperson who declined to be named said, “The former governor respects Kenneth Okonkwo greatly. There may have been misunderstandings, but not betrayal.”

The interview has triggered widespread reactions from political analysts, supporters of the Labour Party, and members of the general public. While some sympathize with Okonkwo, others view the episode as a reflection of deepening factionalism within the party.

Political analyst Dr. Esther Chukwuma told Channels TV:

“It’s unfortunate. Labour Party had a golden opportunity to redefine politics in Nigeria. If internal conflicts aren’t resolved, the dream of 2027 may be lost before it begins.”

Others, however, questioned the timing of Okonkwo’s revelations, suggesting they may be motivated by personal ambition or unresolved grievances.

Kenneth Okonkwo’s remarks come at a time when the Labour Party is attempting to re-strategize ahead of the next general elections. His public criticism may force the party leadership to address grievances or risk losing influential members ahead of the 2027 race.

Discussion Questions:

  • Do you think Peter Obi betrayed the core supporters of the Labour movement?
  • Can the Labour Party survive internal discontent and rebuild for the 2027 elections?
  • Was Kenneth Okonkwo right to go public with his grievances
