The popular shopping malls, SHOPRITE and SPAR known to have different branches in different states in Nigeria were sealed on Tuesday, 5th of March 2024 over refusal to pay taxes, along with Roban stores and Mama Onyinye restaurants.

The sealing was done by the officials of the ESIRS ( Enugu State Internal Revenue Services), who revealed that several warnings have been sent to the malls which yielded no results.

According to Ms Egwuonwu Perpetual, The Head Of Department of Eateries, Bars and Shopping Malls, the agency sent more than just warnings to the facilities, she said the agency visited the facilities to enquire about the receipts of their tax payment but none was presented to them.

She further stated the SHOPRITE has frustrated all their efforts to make them pay for taxes buyers already paid for when buying items. Even after they promised to pay by end of February but still failed to honour their words.

She pointed out that ROBAN STORES have complied with remitting their tax to ESIRS, and also displayed the agency’s sticker.

Ms Perpetual made it known that these malls will continue to be sealed until they complied.

Nnamdi Eneh, The emissary told the reporters how the agency has been educating people over the media on the need to pay tax to the government.

Finally, he said

“The objective (for sealing the facilities) is not to disrupt anybody’s business but since pleading did not work, this is the only way to compel them to do what they are supposed to do.

It seems to be a free day for staffs of the facilities. And a loss to the malls as they would loose sales today
