Who is Thérèse Coffey?

Therese Anne Coffey is a British eminent politician who has been Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Secretary of State for Health and Social Care since September 6, 2022. Being a member of the Conservative Party, previously she served as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions from 2019 to 2022. Since 2010, she has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Suffolk Coastal.

From 2016 to 2019, she served under Prime Minister Theresa May as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. After that, she served under Prime Minister Boris Johnson from July to September 19 as a Minister of State in the same department. After Amber Rudd resigned from Johnson’s cabinet, in September 2019, Coffey was appointed to the post of Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. And after Johnson resigned in 2022, Coffey supported Liz Truss’s bid to become Conservative leader. And following Truss’s appointment as Prime Minister, she appointed Coffey as Secretary of State for Health and Social Care and Deputy Prime Minister.

After graduating from college, she worked in a number of roles for Mars, Incorporated including as finance director for Mars Drinks UK. And then worked for the BBC as a finance manager in the Property division. At the 2005 general election, she stood as a Conservative Party candidate. But came third with 6,079 votes (20% of the vote). In June 2004, in the European Parliament elections, she stood for election to the European Parliament for South East England. The Conservative Party won 35.2% of the vote giving it four seats but Coffey won 7th on the list in this proportional representation system and was not elected. At the next European election in 2009, she was living in Andover, Hampshire. But she missed out by one place on being elected to the European Parliament for South East England.

A Parliamentary Career

She was elected for Suffolk Coastal at the 2010 general election. This made her become the constituency’s first female MP. She thus received 25,475 votes (46.4% of the vote) an increase of 1.8% from John Gummer’s 2005 campaign. On July 6, 2011, she defended Rebekah Brooks over the News of the World’s involvement in the news media phone hacking scandal.

A Frontbench Career

From July 2010 to October 2012, she was a member of the Culture, Media and Sport Committee. When she was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to Michael Fallon Minister for Business and Energy. Next, she was appointed as an assistant Government whip in July 2014. In 2013, she voted against the legislation on same-sex marriage. On May 11, 2015, she was appointed Deputy Leader of the House of Commons. From September 2017 to November 2019, she sat on the Environmental Audit Committee in the House of Commons. She then joined the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in July 2016, as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Environment and Rural Opportunities under Theresa May. In July 2019, when Boris Johnson became Prime Minister, Coffey was promoted to Minister of State.

A Career as Secretary of State for Work and Tensions

In September 2019, following the resignation of Amber Rudd, Coffey joined the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. She went on to retain her position in Johnson’s February 2020 cabinet reshuffle. She was a campaign manager for Liz Truss in the Parliamentary stages of the 2022 Conservative Party leadership election.

A Career as Deputy Prime Minister and Health Secretary

On September 6, 2022, she was appointed by Truss as Deputy Prime Minister and Health and Social Care Secretary in her new government. Her appointment made her the first woman to serve as Deputy Prime Minister.
