Who is Robert Clary?

Robert Clary was a famous French-born American professional actor. Clary is recognized for his role in the television sitcom Hogan’s Heroes as Corporal Louis LeBeau (1965 to 1971). Additionally, he had recurring roles in the soap operas Days of Our Lives (1972 to 1987) and The Bold and the Beautiful (1990 to 1992).

Robert Clary Career

Clary went back to the entertainment industry and started singing songs that became famous not only in France but in the United States too. He then made his first recordings in 1948, which were brought to the U.S. on wire and were issued on disk by Capitol Records. In October 1949, he moved to the United States. Among his first American appearances was a French-language comedy skit on The Ed Wynn Show in 1950. He then met Merv Griffin and Eddie Cantor. This finally led to him meeting Cantor’s daughter, Natalie Cantor Metzger, whom he married in 1965, after being ”the closest of friends” for 15 years. Cantor later got him a spot on The Colgate Comedy Hour. Clary then appeared on NBC’s early sitcom The Martha Raye Show and on CBS’s drama anthology series Appointment with Adventure in the mid-1950s.

His comedic skills were instantly recognized by Broadway, where he then appeared in various popular musicals. The musicals include New Faces of 1952, which was produced as a movie in 1954. In 1952, Clary appeared in the movie Thief of Damascus which also starred Lon Chaney Jr. and Paul Henreid. Clary guest-starred on The Gisele Mackenzie Show (NBC) in 1958. He then guest-starred on The Munsters Today (1989) as Loius Schecter, Lily’s acting coach, in the episode ”Green Eyed Munsters”. Clary was cast in the title role of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in a British production of an Edward Chodorov play, Monsieur Lautrec in 1959. The play ran for 2 weeks at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry. Despite The Stage panning the play, it credited him for playing Lautrec ”with a delicacy and yet moving intenseness.”

LeBeau on Hogan’s Heroes

In 1965, the diminutive 155 cm (5 ft 1 in ) Clary was offered the role of Corporal Loius LeBeau on a new television sitcom titled Hogan’s Heroes. He accepted the role when the pilot was sold. The series was set in a German prisoner of war (POW) camp during World War II. He played a French POW who was a member of an Allied sabotage group operating from inside the camp. Clary became one the last two surviving principal cast members of Hogan’s Heroes, alongside Kenneth Washington (Sergeant Richard Baker, final season), when Cynthia Lynn (Helga, first season, 1965-1966_ died on March 10, 2014. Clary was the last surviving original principal cast member.

Later life and career

Following Hogan’s Heroes cancellation in 1971, he kept close ties with fellow Hogan’s Heroes cast members John Banner, Werner Klemperer, and Leon Askin, whose lives were also affected by the Holocaust. After the show was canceled, Clary appeared in a handful of feature movies with World War II themes, such as the made-for-television movie Remembrance of Love, about the Holocaust. He also appeared on the soap operas Days of Our Lives, The Bold and the Beautiful, and The Young and the Restless.

Clary then appeared in the 1975 movie The Hindenburg, which portrayed a fictional plot to blow up the German airship following its arrival at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station. He portrayed Joseph Spah, a real-life passenger on the airship’s last voyage. Clary then spent years touring Canada and the United States, speaking about the Holocaust. He was also a painter, painting from photographs he took on his travels. In 2001, he published a memoir, From the Holocaust to Hogan’s Heroes: The Autobiography of Robert Clary.

Robert Max Widerman was born to his parents, Moishe Wilderman and Baila Widerman in Paris. His parents were from Poland but moved to France after World War I. His father was a tailor, 15 years older than Clary’s mother, and brought six children from his previous marriage after his wife died in childbirth.

After going back to Paris following World War II, Clary learned that three of his 13 siblings had not been taken away and had survived the Nazi occupation of France.
