Omid Djalili is a well-recognized British professional actor, writer, and comedian, who has been active from 1991 to the present.

Comedy career

The first great success of Djalili’s stand-up comedy career was at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1995 with ”Short, Fat Kebab Shop Owner’s Son.” It was followed by ”The Arab and the Jew” with Jewish comedian Ivor Dembina in 1996. He has performed in many countries, such as Ireland, Belgium, the United States, Australia, Sweden, and Canada, where he had his own HBO Special. He then participated in a show for Comic Relief following the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. Djalili appeared in 2005 on the British TV show Top Gear as a celebrity driver. In the same year, he broke Edinburgh Festival box office records with more than 16,500 ticket sales.

Sky Television then selected him to be the face of their Saturday night film premieres in 2006. Omid also revealed a new tour of the UK titled ‘No Agenda,’ from January 2017 to March 2007, covering 23 different dates. The No Agenda tour DVD was launched in late 2007. He was then voted by the British public as the 60th best stand-up comedian in a Channel 4 program,” The 100 Greatest Stand-Ups”, on March 18, 2007.

Djalili guest-presented the BBC political quiz show Have I Got News for You on October 26, 2007. On November 17, 2007, The Omid Djalili Show began on BBC1 and was a mix of sketches and stand-up material. In late 2008, a second series was recorded and started broadcast on BBC 1 on April 20, 2009. Djalili then performed on We Are Most Amused on ITV1 to mark Prince Charles’s 60th birthday in 2008 and on We Are Most Amused and Amazed to mark his 70th birthday in 2018.

Acting career

Omid has appeared in a number of movies, most notably The Mummy, Gladiator, The World Is Not Enough, Mean Machine, Alien Autopsy, Sky Captain, and the World of Tomorrow. As well as Spy Game, Grow Your Own, Mr. Nice, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Notting Hill, Sex and the City 2, and lends his voice in Over the Hedge. Djalili has observed that he usually appears as a generic Middle Eastern background character in numerous of these movies, frequently commenting that he appears in the James Bond movie as the ”Second Azerbaijani oil pipe attendant”. He has also appeared as Nasim in 22 episodes of the U.S. sitcom Whoopi, starring Whoopi Goldberg. Djalili earned an international film award for Best Supporting Actor in Casanove, starring Jeremy Irons and Heath Ledger.

Producer Cameron Mackintosh revealed on February 12, 2009, that Omid would appear as the second Fagin in the new West End production of Oliver! At the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London. He replaced Rowan Atkinson, who had been contracted until July 18, 2009. In 2009, he became the voice of Yusuf Amur in the famous gaming series Grand Theft Auto. Djalili took up the role in the Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony spin-off game. He then starred in the David Baddiel-scripted movie The Infidel in 2010. The same year he starred in a series of TV and cinema adverts for Moneysupermarket.com.

2011-present

Omid then appeared in the short-lived NBC sitcom The Paul Reiser Show, which was a midseason replacement for the 2010-11 television season. For the BBC Learning project Off By Heart Shakespeare, he portrayed Lord Capulet from Romeo and Juliet and gave the speech ”Hang thee, young baggage, disobedient wretch!” He appeared in the Sky TV version of the Moonfleet shooting in Ireland in 2013. Djalili then appeared in the second series of Thunderbirds Are Go as Horse Williams in October 2016. He lent his voice to the 2015 stop-motion animated comedy Shaun the Sheep Movie. In 2018, he appeared in an acclaimed performance of Fiddler on the Roof at the Chichester Festival Theatre. Djalili then appeared as Dr. Martin Lanselius in the BBC version of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials in 2019. He started hosting the ITV game show Winning Combination in 2020.

Controversy

Omid was criticized for making disparaging remarks about the Welsh language on Twitter in 2019. This was following posting a photograph of a road sign written in Welsh and written underneath, ”There are worse things than being Welsh, dyslexic & having a terrible stutter. But not many.” In response to the unfavorable reaction, he added, ”Going to suggest to Sioned a show with the superb replies, ”referring to Sioned William, the Head of Comedy at BBC Radio, who is Welsh. However, he refused to apologize. Nigel Owens stated that the joke ”just wasn’t funny”, calling it s ”cheap, an offensive jibe at a nation’s language which has needlessly insulted people who have experience with dyslexia or speech impediments”.
