Who is Lee Ji-ah?

Kim Sang-Eun, professionally known as Lee Ji-ah is a famous South Korean actress. Ji-ah rose to popularity with her role in the television drama The Legend (2007). She went on to appear in Beethoven Virus (2008), Athena: Goddess of War (2010), Me Too, Flower! (2011), Thrice Married Woman (2013), My Mister (2018), and The Penthouse: War in Life (2020-2021).

2007-2013

She made her acting debut in the fantasy television series The Legend alongside Bae Yong-Joon in 2007. The high-profile, big-budget production rose her immediately to stardom. She then won the Best New Actress award, Popularity award, and Best Couple award(alongside Bae) at the year-end MBC Drama Awards. Lee then earned the Best New Actress for TV at the Baeksang Arts Awards the following year. She starred in 2008’s Beethoven Virus wherein she played a violinist who gets diagnosed with a disease that leads to complete hearing loss.

Lee was then cast in Style, a TV series based on the 2008 chick-lit novel of the same title. She was inspired by The Devil Wears Prada and played a hardworking assistant to a perfectionist fashion magazine editor played by Kim Hye-soo. Lee later starred in the Korean-Japanese romance movie The Relation of Face, Mind, and Love together with Kang Ji-hwan, which marks Lee’s big-screen debut. She joined the 7-part ”Telecinema” series, which brought together Korean stars and directors, and Japanese writers in late 2009. Each ”Telecinema” was launched in movie theaters and also aired on television on SBS.

She co-starred together with Jung Woo-sung, Soo Ae, and Cha Seung-won in the 2010 spy series Athena: Goddess of War, a spin-off to 2009’s Iris. Lee then starred in the television drama Me Too, Flower! portraying an ill-tempered police officer who falls in love with a young millionaire masquerading as a parking attendant in 2011. When her five-year deal with Bae’s agency KeyEast expired on December 21, 2011, Lee signed with Will Entertainment in March 2012. She then took on the leading role in Thrice Married Woman in 2013.

2014-present

She signed up with a new management agency, HB Entertainment in April 2014. This was followed by a 3-picture deal with Hollywood indie outfit Maybach Film Productions as a screenwriter. She starred in the two-episode fantasy drama Snow Lotus Flower in 2015. She made her big screen comeback in the action thriller movie Musudan in 2016. In May of the same year, she exited HB Entertainment and signed with the new management agency BH Entertainment. In 2018, following a 3-year hiatus, she made her comeback to the small screen in the melodrama My Mister. She was then cast in the horror mystery drama The Ghost Detective the same year. In 2020, Lee starred in the TV series The Penthouse: War in Life aired on SBS TV from October 26, 2020, to September 10, 2021.

Lee moved back to Korea in early 2005 and legally changed her name from Kim Sang-Eun to Kim Ji-ah and adopted the stage name Lee Ji-ah. Kim Sang-Eun was born in South Korea to her parents Kim Sa-young and his spouse. Her father was a businessman while her grandfather is educator Kim Soon-Heung (his pro-Japanese activities during the 1940s are controversial) and among the patrons for the creation of Seoul Arts High School and chairman of Kyunggi High School. Her family moved to the U.S. when she was in the 6th grade, and stayed there for 10 years.

In 2011 she confirmed that she was dating Athena co-star Jung Woo-sung after a photo was taken by a tourist on March 2011 of them on a date in Paris, surfaced on the internet.
