Police responded to a call around 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 12 at New Leaf, located at 19601 Leslie St., Queensville.

A man who was found dead at an East Gwillimbury group home has been identified as Ashiru Sarafa Awoyemi.

York Regional Police are investigating the death of Ashiru, 50, who was a personal support worker at New Leaf: Living and Learning Together in East Gwillimbury.

The East York resident had worked at the group home since 2017, according to his family members.

Ashiru was found without vital signs in a swimming pool at New Leaf after taking a client out for activities. Paramedics on scene couldn’t revive the man, police say.

The Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development was involved because the man was an employee of the group home, according to YRP.

New Leaf is a social services organization that provides support to individuals with a developmental disability, dual-diagnosis, and/or other complex needs.

The cause of death is still under investigation.

This gentleman(Mr. Awoyemi Sarafa Ashiru)* worked for a company called New Leaf Living and learning together Inc. Located at Queenvilles – East Gwillimbury, Ontario. The man got drowned inside the company’s swimming pool while accompanied a client to the pool on Friday 12th, 2021 around 12pm. We need justice and fairness in unmasking the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. The negligence of the company and continuous intimidation, bully and harassment from the manager of the care home forced Mr. Ashiru to took the client to the pool without second staff to accompanied them and no lifeguard present at the company pool at the time of the incident (All pools were closed down by Ontario Government due to Covid) The York region police are investigating the incident but we need this story to go virals so our people will know the extends of humiliation and constant harassment we are experiencing in hands of the company.
