Newly Crowned Miss Universe Nigeria, Miss Chidinma Adetshina recently opened up on why she thinks South Africans don’t consider her South African enough.
Chidinma Adetshina, 23 year old law student, born to a Nigerian father and South African mother found herself making headlines after she received criticisms about her nationality which ultimately led to her withdrawal from the participation.
The former South-African Pageant, Chidinma withdrew from the participation after South African’s nation home affairs announced her mother may have committed ‘identity theft’ to become a South African citizen.
However, the organisers of Miss Universe Nigeria invited her to participate in Miss Universe Nigeria Contest after she withdrew as a finalist in the South African contest.
Surprisingly, Miss Chidinma won Miss Universe Nigeria on Saturday, which means she will be representing Nigeria at November’s Miss Universe competition.
The news spread across social media, some people celebrated her while others said she was undeserving of the crown as she joined the contest in its last stage.
In a recent interview, Chidinma said she felt South Africans didn’t consider her South African enough because of her name.
She further explained how the situation hurt her emotions.
She said ;
“It was a very horrible experience, and I would not wish it on anybody because I have lived there for 23 years.
It is heartbreaking to see that I was not welcomed and accepted”,
The newly crowned Miss Universe Nigeria was also asked about the accusations levelled agains her mother. But she declined to comment on the issue, stating it is still a legal matter.
She added ;
What I do know is that I was born in South Africa, and I am still South African, and I am still proudly Nigerian”
