In an exciting move, the Senate has officially confirmed South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem as the new Secretary of Homeland Security! This big decision, made on Saturday with a vote of 59-34, places her at the helm of one of President Trump’s top goals for his second term: tightening immigration controls.
Noem, a Republican, is now the fourth member of Trump’s cabinet. She’s joining Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and Pete Hegseth, who just got the nod as Secretary of Defense after Vice President J.D. Vance broke a tie vote.
Noem is ready to take charge of the department that will play a key role in President Trump’s immigration plans. This includes tackling deportations, changing visa rules, and boosting border security through the many actions Trump has rolled out since coming back to office. At her confirmation hearing, Noem, who is 53, made it clear she strongly supports Trump’s immigration goals.
“The reason that I asked for it is because I knew it was the president’s number one priority,” Noem told the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, about why she is best for the role.
“I knew that it would be needed to have someone in the position, that would do what the president promised the American people and would be strong enough to do it,” she said.
In her confirmation hearing, Noem made it clear she plans to team up with Trump to bring back the “Remain in Mexico” policy. This would mean that some asylum seekers will have to stay in Mexico until it’s their turn to court in the U.S., aiming to reduce the number of people hanging out in the country while waiting.
Noem also promised to shut down the CPB One App, which lets asylum seekers apply for help with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. It’s worth noting that this app got its appointments canceled just hours after Trump took office.
She’s shown a keen interest in ending birthright citizenship, something Trump wants to tackle through executive action. Many experts think he can’t just do this alone and that it would need a change to the Constitution. So far, a U.S. judge has stepped in to block this move, calling it clearly unconstitutional.
As for her role, Noem will be working closely with Trump’s pick for “border czar,” Tom Homan, and Stephen Miller, who has helped shape Trump’s immigration strategy. She’ll likely collaborate with Hegseth, especially since some of Trump’s actions involve using military help for things like border walls and deportation flights.
With her new position, Noem will be in charge of overseeing over 260,000 federal workers. Her job isn’t just about immigration; she’ll also be dealing with natural disasters and making sure that intelligence agencies are on guard against threats.
After a confirmation vote on Saturday, Noem officially stepped down as the governor of South Dakota, passing the torch to Lt. Gov. Larry Rhoden.
