Reno Omokri Slams Peter Obi Over Alleged Hypocrisy In Coalition Talks With PDP Leaders
Abuja, Nigeria – May 26, 2025
Renowned political commentator and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has criticized Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for engaging in high-level discussions with key figures of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a political institution Obi previously condemned as a “structure of criminality.”
Omokri’s remarks come in response to Peter Obi’s recent consultations with prominent PDP stalwarts, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and ex-Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, all of whom he met separately during a political visit to Abuja. These meetings, according to insiders, were centered on the possibility of forming a grand opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Taking to his verified social media platform (X, formerly Twitter), Reno Omokri questioned Obi’s political integrity, referencing the Labour Party candidate’s previous denunciation of the PDP’s political structure:
“You said the PDP is a structure of criminality. And you are now visiting the same ‘structures of criminality.’ What does that make you?”
Omokri’s post insinuates that Obi’s current moves contradict his earlier stance and raise questions about the sincerity of his political ideology. The comment reflects a broader concern among some political analysts about the consistency of Obi’s messaging and his long-term strategic goals.
Peter Obi exited the PDP in May 2022, just weeks before the party’s presidential primary, citing ideological differences and the need to offer Nigerians a clean break from traditional political structures. He joined the Labour Party and quickly gained significant traction among young voters and urban professionals, leading to the rise of the “Obidient” movement.
Throughout the 2023 campaign, Obi consistently portrayed the PDP and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as outdated, corrupt, and lacking the moral authority to lead Nigeria. His branding of the PDP as a “structure of criminality” became a hallmark of his campaign rhetoric.
Reno Omokri has been a vocal critic of Peter Obi since the post-election period, accusing him of fostering a toxic political culture through his supporters—commonly known as the Obidients. Omokri has claimed that he received threats and harassment from members of the movement and publicly vowed to dismantle it.
In a March 2025 interview, Omokri declared:
“I took a vow to destroy the Obidient movement, not because of Peter Obi, but because of what the movement represents—the bullying, the ethnic profiling, and the cyber harassment. That is not the future we want for Nigerian democracy.”
Peter Obi’s recent outreach to PDP leaders suggests a shift in strategy ahead of the 2027 elections. Analysts believe Obi may be seeking to form or join a broader coalition to strengthen opposition efforts against the ruling APC, which continues to maintain a strong national foothold under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
However, Omokri has dismissed the likelihood of such a coalition materializing, particularly one that involves northern heavyweights like Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, or Nasir El-Rufai, aligning behind Obi. He argues that Obi’s campaign in 2023 alienated many political elites and regional stakeholders, particularly in the North, due to its perceived focus on regional sentiments and online activism over ground-level political mobilization.
Reno Omokri’s critique highlights the challenges Peter Obi faces as he attempts to navigate the complexities of Nigerian political alliances while maintaining the integrity of his anti-establishment image. As discussions surrounding a unified opposition continue to gain momentum, Obi’s ability to reconcile past rhetoric with current political necessities will be critical in shaping his future relevance on the national stage
