Nwannekaenyi Nnamdi Okwu Kanu aka Mazi Nnamdi Kanu finally appears in court on the 21st of October 2021, following his arrest towards the end of June 2021.
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is popularly called by the Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB). A southeastern coalition of Nigeria that seeks a separation from the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The IPOB is one of the strongest Biafran agitation movements among the likes of RE-IPOB and TRIPOB.
*The Origin–The Arrest, The Bail and The Escape*
The supreme leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra was first arrested in 2015 and charged, following an eleven-count charge bordering on incitement, treasonable felony and terrorism; although six of those charges was struck out in early 2017 including terrorism.
However, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was granted bail in 2017 by justice Binta Nyako of the federal high court under the following conditions;
• Mr Kanu must not hold rallies.
• He must not grant interviews.
• He must not be in a crowd of more than 10 people.
• He must provide three sureties in the sum of N100 million each.
• One of the sureties must be a senior highly placed person of Igbo extraction such as a senator.
• The second surety must be a highly respected Jewish leader since Mr Kanu said his religion is Judaism
• The third surety must be a highly respected person who owns landed property and is resident in Abuja.
• The IPOB leader must deposit his Nigerian passport
• He must also deposit his British passport with the court
• He must provide the court with reports on the progress of his health and treatment monthly.
• The order for him to deposit his Nigerian and British passports also mean he cannot travel out of the country (If this is considered, it is the thirteenth condition).
Contrary to the bail terms Mr Nmamdi Kanu absconded the Nation following the destruction of his house and several attempts on his life. His lawyer Alloy Ejimakor termed this act as the “Rule Of Self Preservation”.
Since his re-arrest by Interpol in July 2021, he hasn’t been seen in Court. Held under the custody of the Department of State Service(DSS).
However, on the 21st of October 2021, he was paraded into court to face his trial. Due to the agitation and curiosity of the people including the Ohaneze Ndi Igbo who asked the Department of State Security(DSS) to produce Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in court.
His trial has accrued massive security in the Federal High Court Abuja. Security personnel refused to grant anyone access into the court premises including Senator Ifeanyi Uba, who lamented on his right as the senator of the Federal Republic been infringed on.
The blatant refusal of Journalists, Lawyers even the British Broadcast Corporation into the court premises to witness the trial arouse some suspicion.
*Outcomes Of The October 21st Trial*
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu plead not guilty to the charges levelled against him. Therefore the trial has been adjourned till November.
The trial was presided over by Hon. Justice Binta Nyako. The charges that were levelled against him by the federal government of Nigeria are;
• Terrorism.
• Treason.
• Involvement with a banned separatist movement
• Inciting public violence through radio broadcasts.
• Defamation of Nigerian authorities through broadcasts.
But he denied them all pleading not guilty. The IPOB supporters continue to pledge their allegiance to him, What more can we say than let justice have its full course.
