HOW TO SPOT A FAKE RECRUITER
It is no news that the unemployment rate in the country has been high, and certain hoodlums are trying to take advantage of this and the desperation of youths to scam them of their money or kidnap them.
So I’ve brought up different strategies that a job seeker can use to spot a fake recruiter.
1. Grammatical errors
Every company is very meticulous about their reputation online especially when they are looking for new intake, one of the things that they are very particular about is there grammar structure, spellings and punctuations.
When a company, or recruiter sends you a mail with alot of grammatical errors, this is something worth checking out, if the error is just one then you might want to overlook, but if the error is much then it’s a red flag and you have every right to be suspicious.
2. Always check out the address of the interview at least a day before the interview, most recruiters choose a lonely place to have their interview so that they can kidnap their prospects, if you do not live within the area, kindly ask a friend to help you check out the address so that you can verify if the company actually works from that location, or get your friend to ask the people living around about the company, when they started and how long they have been in operation.
3. Check for the website and emails, most recruiters use a professional email (company email), emails that end with the company’s name.
Eg info@ssss.com
hr@xvyfu.com
Tontodike@ftaio.com
Most genuine recruiters however use their Gmail and Yahoo mails but it wouldn’t hurt to check if their emails have a profile picture attached, if they do, please check them out on google.
4. Check if the recruiter is asking for a upfront payment.
Most recruiters come under the guise of requesting for money to help you secure either an accommodation, company tools or your preparation, and even registration please do not pay attention to any recruiter who asks for an upfront amount before hiring you. No professional company would ask a new intake for money, instead most interviewers pay for your transportation and meals during your period of the interview.
5. You can go to LinkedIn and find a employee of that company and ask if they are truly hiring, or you can use glassdoor website to check for the reviews from that company and if that company exists, you could check the name of the company on nairaland to see if someone had used that company name to scam someone else in the past, if there number has been dropped for you to contact, verify their name on the true caller app or website and see if their name matches what was revealed to you.
6. Spot when the company is asking for sensitive information like your bvn, and other personal information that isn’t needed until after the interview.
Please keep yourself safe with these information and try not to get scammed
