Ganduje Dismisses Atiku’s Coalition Moves, Says Opposition Alliance Doomed To Fail
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has downplayed talks of a potential opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the move as a “joint venture” destined to collapse.
Ganduje made this statement on Friday while addressing journalists after leading members of the APC National Working Committee (NWC) on a Sallah visit to former President Muhammadu Buhari at his residence in Kaduna State.
Earlier that day, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had also paid a visit to Buhari. He was accompanied by notable political figures, including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal, former Minister of Communications Isa Pantami, and ex-governors Gabriel Suswam (Benue), Jibrilla Bindow (Adamawa), and Achike Udenwa (Imo).
Although Atiku confirmed that efforts are underway to build a formidable opposition coalition, he clarified that the visit to Buhari was unrelated to those plans.
When asked about the increasing consultations among opposition figures—particularly Atiku—Ganduje remained unfazed, expressing confidence in the APC’s dominance.
“We’re not bothered at all,” he said. “This is history repeating itself. They are engaging in a joint venture that cannot succeed. From what we observe, they are just incompatible elements trying to merge. It’s a game, and while we won’t disclose our strategy, rest assured—we’re ready.”
Ganduje highlighted the APC’s control of 21 states, calling it the “strongest party in West Africa,” and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to strengthening its influence ahead of 2027.
“We’re targeting more states. Some governors may join us, and where they don’t, we’ll defeat them at the polls. We’re confident, but not complacent—we’re moving forward,” he added.
Do you think the opposition coalition led by Atiku has a real chance of challenging the APC in 2027?
Do you think Ganduje’s confidence in the APC’s strength is justified, considering current political dynamics?
