It has been confirmed that the eight(8) months strike embarked on the 14th of February by the Academic Staff Union Of Universities (Asuu) has been successfully suspended. Although an authorized statement has not been released by the union.
The strike initially started due to the failurel of the Federal Government(FG) to meet the demands of the 2009 memorandum of understanding entered with the Federal Government.
Which includes;Funding for Revitalisation of public universities Earned Academic Allowances;Proliferation of public Universities
;Visitation Panels/Release of White Papers
;University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) as a broad spectrum software to stop illegality and provide for an alternative
payment platform in the university system.
The union began the strike as a form of protesting against their unmet demands.
The eight months strike got suspended after the meeting with its leadership, National Executive Committee(NEC) which began by 7pm on Thursday, October 13 till Friday morning October 14, to conclude their next plan after the ruling of the court of appeal.
Also, members of tge NEC which consists the chairman of the state chapters and members of the executives were all present in the meeting which was conducted at the ASUU national secretariat in Abuja.
The Court of Appeal has previously ordered the union to call off the strike whilst they continue to discuss or reach an agreement with the government, before its appeal of the ruling ordering lecturers to resume work can be given attention to.
Importantly, this ruling of the Court of Appeal and the intervention of Femi Gbajabiamila, the union has resolved to end the strike temporarily.
Hence, all members of ASUU has been addressed to resume to their duty posts, and this will take effect from 12am on Friday, 14th October 2022.
However, NEC regrettably noted that the issue which led to the strike hasn’t yet been addressed.
Although Rev. Chris Okotie, interim government campaigner and former presidential candidate believes the constant strike won’t come to an end, unless there is a permanent solution, which he says to be the establishment of aboriginal democracy. This allows the proficient bodies make laws to govern and protect their federation in other to develop economic stability.
Of course, there would be more ASUU strike occurring in the future, since the Federal Government has failed their promises consecutively.
Will aboriginal democracy be the solution to the incessant ASUU Strike?
