Emmanuel Sakyi Afriyie, a 25 year old contract worker at one of Ghana’s largest banks, was recently arrested by security officials for allegedly stealing around GH¢1.2m from customers’ bank accounts.

 

Among the accounts he plundered were those of a deceased judge and a former police inspector general.

 

Afriyie is said to have transferred some of the stolen funds to his private account at another bank, as well as to his 17 partners’ accounts at various banks and their mobile money accounts.

 

He is also accused of spending sprees, including using some of the money to buy an iPhone 14 Pro Max and a Toyota Camry.

According to the police investigation, the suspect intended to flee with his girlfriend after buying a plane ticket to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

 

However, luck was not on his side as security services reacted quickly and left a trail that led to his arrest at Kotoka International Airport on June 4, 2023.

 

“On June 4, 2023, A1, along with his girlfriend Ivy Okertchiri, who was his guarantor, attempted to flee the jurisdiction to Dubai but were arrested by security at Kotoka International Airport. Immigrated from Ghana and handed over to the police,” reported the facts, quoted in a report published by the Chronicle newspaper.

 

Afriyie reportedly obtained his boss’s password by silently recording it as he typed it on his cellphone.

 

then used the recorded clip to obtain his password and conducted fraudulent transactions from customer accounts over a two-month period.

 

Some of his accomplices were subsequently arrested, prosecuted and held pending bail.

 

Afriyie is charged with conspiracy and theft with some of his associates. He was also accused of false counts and forgery, bringing a total of 13 charges against him. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

 

Appeared before the Court presided over by Ellen Ofei-Ayeh on June 16, 2023.

 

Eleven alleged accomplices are still at large and the police investigation is ongoing.
