2027 Elections: Political Coalition Pushes For New Party, ADA, Submits Application To INEC

Abuja, Nigeria – June 20, 2025

Ahead of the highly anticipated 2027 general elections, a coalition of political stakeholders, civil society leaders, and former public office holders has formally applied to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the registration of a new political party — the African Democratic Alliance (ADA).

Opposition leaders led by former Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, and 2023 SDP governorship candidate, Dr. Umar Ardo, have formally applied to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the registration of a new political party, the All Democratic Alliance (ADA).

In a joint statement, Amaechi, who contested the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2023 presidential primaries, and Ardo, who served as Special Adviser to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, revealed that the May 6, 2025 meeting of the National Opposition Coalition Group (NNOG), chaired by former Senate President David Mark, laid the foundation for the formation of ADA.

The move, confirmed in a letter submitted to INEC headquarters in Abuja this week, signals a bold attempt to reshape Nigeria’s political terrain and challenge the long-standing dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to the coalition’s spokesperson, Dr. Ibrahim Dogo, the African Democratic Alliance is being created in response to Nigerians’ growing dissatisfaction with existing political parties and their inability to deliver tangible economic growth, security, and youth inclusion.

“The ADA is a people-driven political movement that seeks to redefine leadership in Nigeria by prioritizing accountability, innovation, equity, and generational inclusion,” Dogo said at a press briefing in Abuja.

He added that the party’s founding principles are rooted in African values of solidarity, responsible governance, and sustainable development — with a strong focus on empowering young Nigerians, women, and marginalized communities.

Officials at the Independent National Electoral Commission have acknowledged receipt of the coalition’s application and confirmed that it is under review. Under Nigerian law, any new political party must meet strict criteria, including demonstrating national spread, establishing offices in at least 24 states, and complying with constitutional requirements regarding leadership structure and internal democracy.

INEC is expected to complete the verification process and either approve or reject the registration within 60 to 90 days, barring any legal challenges or administrative hurdles.

The push for a new party comes at a time when Nigeria’s political atmosphere is increasingly volatile. With inflation, unemployment, and security challenges still affecting millions, many Nigerians — especially youth — have called for alternative platforms outside the traditional political elite.

Since the 2023 elections, there have been visible cracks within the two dominant parties. Discontented members of both APC and PDP, as well as former members of the Labour Party and smaller parties, are said to be part of the ADA initiative.

Some reports suggest that high-profile political figures, including ex-ministers, retired military officers, former governors, and technocrats, are backing the formation of ADA behind the scenes. However, the coalition has yet to publicly unveil its full list of founding members or potential candidates for the 2027 race.

On social media, the news of ADA’s formation has sparked excitement and skepticism in equal measure. Supporters hail it as a much-needed third force, while critics question whether it will truly offer anything different from past political experiments.

Political analysts say that if ADA successfully registers and maintains momentum, it could potentially disrupt the traditional two-party contest in 2027 — especially if it forms strategic alliances with influential regional blocs and secures backing from disillusioned voters.

The coalition has announced plans to launch its manifesto and official party logo in the coming months, while a national convention is tentatively scheduled for later this year
