Actress Dayo Amusa Speaks Out Against Online Criticism
Actress Dayo Amusa was reacting to criticism directed at Nollywood actors and other celebrities who continued posting movie promotions, business activities, and personal content on social media while news of the kidnapping of school children and teachers in Oyo State was trending.
According to her, some social media users accused celebrities of being insensitive and expected them to constantly speak out against insecurity, kidnappings, and government failures.
“The bullying many of you subject our colleagues to in the industry is crazy. They can’t post their jobs without being called insensitive. We go to the bank to take loans to shoot movies at high interest rates, but you want us to suspend our jobs and be posting videos of kidnapping and cursing the government daily while you’re in your own office tweeting and enjoying your environment.
I’ve made up my mind that many of you trolls don’t matter. I won’t pander to mobs, as I didn’t build my brand on it. I have other strings of income; don’t come under my post to act silly, I’ll send you home.
That said, may God bring succor to the family of the kids and teachers kidnapped in Oyo State. May they return home safely
According to actress Dayo Amusa, many online critics expect celebrities to take a more active role in discussing national issues, particularly incidents of insecurity and kidnappings. She suggested that these critics want entertainers to temporarily set aside their movie promotions, business activities, and other professional engagements in order to focus on speaking about national tragedies.
The actress argued that trolls often expect celebrities to consistently post about kidnappings, insecurity, and other social challenges while using their platforms to condemn government failures and demand action from authorities. In addition, critics expect public figures to raise awareness about national crises, show solidarity with victims and their families, and prioritize discussions about such issues over entertainment-related content.
According to Amusa, there is also an expectation that celebrities should publicly react whenever a major incident occurs in the country and actively participate in campaigns aimed at drawing attention to the situation.
However, she maintained that while celebrities can sympathize with victims and support worthy causes, they should not be pressured into abandoning their careers or turning their social media pages into platforms dedicated solely to discussing national problems.

Critics argued that celebrities have large platforms and significant influence, which they believe should be used to draw attention to important national issues such as insecurity, kidnappings, and the safety of schoolchildren.

They contended that public silence from influential figures can be perceived as indifference, especially during periods of national mourning or crisis.
