Senate Won’t Be Held Hostage By Any Member – Akpabio

Abuja — The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has declared that the Nigerian Senate under his leadership will not be held hostage by any individual member, regardless of political affiliation or influence.

Akpabio made this statement on Wednesday during plenary, while addressing reports of internal disagreements within the upper legislative chamber over certain policy debates and committee decisions. He emphasized that the Senate would continue to function as a united and independent institution focused on national interest rather than personal or partisan agendas.

“The Nigerian Senate is an institution of the people, not a platform for personal battles or political blackmail,” Akpabio said firmly. “No senator, no matter how powerful, will be allowed to hold this chamber hostage or undermine the collective will of the majority.”

He noted that robust debates and differing opinions are normal in a democracy, but warned against actions or utterances that could destabilize the Senate or hinder the smooth conduct of legislative business.

Akpabio also urged lawmakers to uphold decorum and mutual respect during proceedings, stressing that the public expects the National Assembly to deliver results, not internal conflict.

“We are elected to serve Nigerians, not ourselves. Whatever disagreements we have must be resolved through dialogue and respect for parliamentary rules,” he added.

The Senate President’s remarks come amid reports of tension among lawmakers over recent committee assignments, ministerial screening outcomes, and disagreements on budgetary oversight matters.

Political observers say Akpabio’s statement is a clear attempt to reaffirm his leadership authority and maintain order within the Red Chamber as the National Assembly faces increasing pressure to deliver on legislative reforms promised by the current administration.

He concluded by reiterating that the Senate would continue to support President Bola Tinubu’s policies aimed at national development, while maintaining its constitutional role of checks and balances
