Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has officially returned to the Senate after months of suspension and legal battles that drew nationwide attention. Her reinstatement follows a Federal High Court ruling declaring her suspension unconstitutional, a decision that has sparked both celebration and controversy across Nigeria’s political space.

Natasha’s Political Bio

Senator Natasha Akpoti‑Uduaghan was primarily known as a fiery advocate for environmental policy and government transparency. Elected on a wave of support from younger voters, she built her reputation on being an “outsider “ willing to challenge the established political order.

Her career, though relatively young in the senate, has been marked by passionate speeches and a strong social media presence that made her both a rising star and a thorn in the side of her political opponents.

Natasha Akpoti‑Uduaghan is the Senator representing Kogi Central in Nigeria’s National Assembly. She is a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Before the controversies, she held committee positions as a chair of the Senate Committee on Diaspora & NGOs.

The Allegations And Suspension.

The trouble started in July 2023, just a couple of months after she was sworn in. Nastasha stood up on the Senate floor and made some serious allegations against Senator Godswill Akpabio. She claimed that he was meddling in the election petition case she had filed against Abubakar Sadiku-Ohere of the All Progressives Congress (APC). She essentially accused Akpabio of having an unhealthy interest in the Kogi State National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal.

Natasha also alleged that Akpabio made unwanted sexual advances toward her during a December 2023 visit to his residence in Abuja, where she and her husband were guests. She claimed he attempted to kiss her and made inappropriate comments, which she refused.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s conflict stems from allegations of sexual harassment made public in late February 2025.

The situation escalated quickly into a Senate suspension, legal battles, and widespread protests, highlighting issues of power dynamics, gender-based violence, and institutional accountability in Nigeria’s National Assembly. Akpabio has consistently denied the claims.

These details emerged in a February 28, 2025, interview on Arise TV, where she described the incident as part of a broader pattern of harassment in the Senate.

Akpabio denied the allegations outrightly through a formal written response from his legal team, calling them “baseless and malicious.”

His office and wife, Ekaette Akpabio, publicly dismissed the claims as fabrications aimed at discrediting him.

There are no recorded direct threats from Akpabio, but the Senate’s actions, dismissing her petition on procedural grounds the same day it was filed and immediately suspending her, have been widely viewed as retaliatory efforts to silence her.

That petition was reviewed by the Ethics Committee.

Around the same time, in a session, she refused to occupy a new seat assigned to her, repeatedly raised points of order, spoke without being recognized, and was seen as defying instructions from the presiding officer – Akpabio.

The Senate’s Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions Committee, chaired by Senator Neda Imasuen recommended her six‑month suspension for misconduct.

The Senate subsequently approved the recommendation: her office was locked, her salaries and allowances withheld, and she was barred from being represented as a senator during the suspension

The suspension stemmed from allegations that she improperly influenced a government contract, though Natasha has consistently called it a “smear campaign.”

In contrast, Natasha fired back,

“This is a politically motivated witch-hunt by Senator Harrow and his allies to silence a dissenting voice.”

Akpabio Wants to Kill Me” – A Desperate Cry for Help

At her homecoming rally in Kogi State (April 1, 2025), Natasha publicly alleged that Senate President Akpabio, in concert with former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello, plotted to kill her.

She also claimed they were behind a recall petition aimed at removing her from office.

In interviews Channels TV, she emphasized that after her suspension, her security detail was withdrawn, which she believed was a deliberate move to leave her vulnerable and exposed to harm.

Natasha says she made these statements publicly,at her rally and in media interviews.

This period was clearly terrifying for Nastasha, She openly stated that she believed Akpabio wanted to kill her. Feeling threatened and seeking protection, she went to confide in and report the matter to the highest levels of law enforcement. She submitted a formal petition to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), investigating the threats she perceived from the Senate President.

According to Natasha, hose six months of suspension were brutal for her. It wasn’t just about not getting her salary; it was about being completely silenced. Her constituents in Kogi Central were left without a voice in the red chamber.

The most painful part, as she l described, was being shut down from public speaking opportunities. She was invited to speak at several prestigious events, but each time, she claimed, the long arm of her suspension was used to stop her. She specifically mentioned being blocked from speaking at:

· The Nigerian Institute of Chartered Arbitrators in Abuja.

· The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS).

On top of that, she was fighting numerous legal battles to get her job back. She filed a slew of court cases, challenging the legality of her suspension.

Her main opponent in all these legal tussles was, of course, Senator Godswill Akpabio, who maintained the stance that the Senate had the constitutional power to discipline its members and that due process was followed. He and the Senate legal team defended the suspension all the way.

Moreso, before the Senate’s disciplinary action, on March 4, 2025, a Federal High Court in Abuja issued a restraining order stopping the Ethics Committee from proceeding with disciplinary actions against her.

Despite that court order, the Senate proceeded to suspend her on March 6, 2025, which Natasha challenged by filing a contempt suit against Akpabio, Imasuen, and others for disobeying the court order.

Yet, Natasha didn’t give up the fight, when she first sought to return after the court ruling in July 2025, she postponed her resumption partly because the National Assembly leadership demanded (or expected) a public apology before she could return.

Even after her suspension period expired in September 2025, the Senate delayed simple resumption. She formally notified the Senate on September 4, 2025, but was told her suspension was “still active” due to a pending Court of Appeal case.

On September 23rd 2025, while speaking to journalists on her return day she rejected any demand for apology and described her suspension as “fraud and illegality.”

SERAP (Socio‑Economic Rights and Accountability Project) repeatedly intervened, calling on Akpabio to reverse the suspension, and later suing him in suit seeking reinstatement and restoration of her rights.

A constituents’ group from Kogi Central filed a suit, challenging the suspension as violating their constitutional right to representation.

The Court of Appeal, in June 2025, struck out two motions by Akpabio related to appealing against the Federal High Court’s decision and awarded ₦100,000 costs.

Courts also issued orders barring press interviews or public comments about the case for parties involved (to avoid media campaigns affecting the judicial process).

In contempt actions, Natasha held that the Senate’s decision to suspend her disregarded a valid court restraining order.

Criticism And Stance from Akpabio Side

The PDP strongly condemned the suspension, accusing the Senate leadership of trying to cover up and violating the right of Kogi Central’s constituents to representation.

Akpabio has denied allegations of sexual harassment.

Regarding allegations of plotting to kill her or removing her security, Akpabio’s spokesperson denied involvement.

Akpabio also filed appeals and legal motions to uphold the Senate’s action or contest the High Court’s ruling.

Official Address And Way Forward

On July 8, 2025, a Federal High Court (Abuja) ruled that her six‑month suspension was unconstitutional and excessive, and ordered her immediate reinstatement.

In response, Natasha wrote to the Senate notifying them of her intention to resume duties on July 15, 2025.

She postponed the immediate return because the Senate wanted a copy of the court judgment and wanted (or expected) a public apology.

Ultimately, on September 23, 2025, she officially resumed her legislative duties in Kogi State / Federal Senate in Abuja.

On her return, she refused to apologize and reaffirmed her view that the suspension was illegal.

So,Nastasha took her fight to the courts, and she won. A Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice O. A. Egwuatu, looked at the case and delivered a landmark judgment.

The court declared her suspension illegal, unlawful, and unconstitutional. The judge stated that the Senate had overstepped its bounds, as only a court of law has the power to determine whether a legislator has committed a crime. The court ordered her immediate reinstatement and the payment of all her outstanding salaries and allowances.

The Senate, bound by the court order, had no choice but to comply. And just like that, Senator Nastasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the senator from Kogi State, was back in her seat, able to represent her people once again. It was a huge victory for her and a powerful reminder of the importance of the judiciary as a check on legislative power.

Her return isn’t necessarily a declaration of innocence. It’s often a procedural move. The initial suspension might have had a time limit, or her legal team could have successfully argued that keeping her suspended without a concluded investigation violated her rights. It’s crucial to understand that her issues are not cancelled. The controversy is like a cloud that has temporarily lifted but could easily storm again depending on the final findings of the ethics probe

The official resolution for her return was dry legalese, but the meaning was clear, the suspension was lifted pending the completion of a full review. The way forward is uncertain. The official issues haven’t been cancelled, they’re just on hold.

The key question is whether the full investigation will exonerate her, leading to a full vindication, or if new evidence will emerge, reigniting the scandal. For now, the immediate way forward is a return to work under a microscope, with every vote and statement scrutinized.

The Public Reaction.

The public is fiercely divided, much like everything else these days. Supporters are celebrating online with hashtags like #NatashaReturns, seeing her as a victim who beat the system. Opponents are outraged, viewing her return as proof that politicians are above the law.

As for her main opponent, Senator Joshua W.Harrow, He has certainly not let the matter die. He released a statement saying, “While I respect the Senate’s procedural rules, this decision is a disappointment.

Our work on the Ethics Committee continues, and we will ensure a thorough and final investigation is completed.

Conclusion.

Natasha’s return to the senate floor is less of an ending and more of an intermission. It sets the stage for the next act of this political drama, where the findings of the full investigation will ultimately write the final chapter. Her effectiveness as a senator now hinges on whether she can operate under this intense pressure and whether the cloud of scandal permanently clears or eventually rains down.

However, can Natasha reclaim her political momentum, or has the scandal permanently damaged her credibility?
