Jonathan To Keyamo, Odinkalu: Keep Off My Political Journey

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has issued a strong warning to critics and political commentators, including Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), and human rights lawyer, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, advising them to steer clear of his political decisions and personal journey.

In a statement released by his media office, Jonathan expressed displeasure at what he described as “persistent misrepresentations, unsolicited opinions, and undue interference” from individuals seeking to dictate his political path. The former president emphasized that while public discourse is a democratic right, attempts to influence or disparage his personal choices cross the line of respect and fairness.

“Dr. Goodluck Jonathan is a statesman who has dedicated his life to the service of Nigeria and Africa. His decisions, whether political or otherwise, are guided by his conviction, experience, and the greater good of the nation. He will not allow anyone to define his political journey for him,” the statement read in part.

Jonathan’s caution follows comments by Festus Keyamo and Prof. Chidi Odinkalu regarding his recent engagements with political actors. Keyamo, in a public statement, reportedly questioned Jonathan’s meetings with certain politicians, suggesting they might contradict his democratic legacy. Similarly, Odinkalu criticized what he called “inconsistencies” in the former president’s political posture, warning that such actions could undermine his reputation as a global statesman.

Both remarks appear to have provoked a strong reaction from Jonathan, who insists that his political engagements are driven by personal conviction and his broader mission to strengthen democratic institutions, both in Nigeria and across Africa.

Since leaving office in 2015, Jonathan has positioned himself as a respected mediator and democracy advocate across the African continent. He has served as an election observer in several countries and participated in peace-building missions under the auspices of the African Union (AU) and ECOWAS.

However, his recent meetings with Nigerian political stakeholders have fueled speculations about a possible return to frontline politics, particularly as the 2027 general elections draw nearer. While Jonathan has not openly declared any ambition, his growing visibility has sparked debates over whether he intends to play an active political role or simply maintain his influence as a statesman.

Jonathan’s stern message has divided opinions in Nigeria’s political space. Supporters argue that his critics, including Keyamo and Odinkalu, are attempting to undermine his enduring relevance in Nigerian politics. They contend that Jonathan, as a two-term governor, former vice president, and ex-president, has the right to decide his future without unsolicited interference.

On the other hand, some political analysts maintain that as a former president and public figure, Jonathan remains subject to scrutiny. They argue that Nigerians deserve clarity about his intentions, especially given the speculation surrounding his possible involvement in 2027 politics.

Jonathan’s warning highlights the delicate balance between his statesmanlike role and the pressures of Nigeria’s volatile political environment. His enduring influence continues to make him a figure of interest not only in the country but also across Africa. Political watchers say his next moves will either cement his legacy as a democratic icon or draw him back into the complexities of Nigeria’s power struggles.

For now, Jonathan has made his position clear: his political journey remains a personal decision, and those attempting to shape or discredit it will not be entertained
