I’m Not In Supremacy Battle With Any Monarch – Alaafin
Published: August 19, 2025
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba (Dr.) Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, has dismissed reports suggesting that he is engaged in a supremacy contest with other Yoruba monarchs, insisting that his focus remains on preserving the heritage and unity of the Yoruba race.
Speaking through his media office on Tuesday, the revered monarch described recent media narratives portraying him as being at loggerheads with fellow traditional rulers as “misleading, sensational, and unhelpful.”
According to the statement, the Alaafin emphasized that the Yoruba traditional institution is too sacred to be reduced to petty rivalries, adding that every monarch has distinct roles rooted in history and tradition.
“There is no supremacy battle between me and any monarch. The Yoruba nation is blessed with highly respected traditional rulers, and each one plays a significant role in sustaining our cultural values. My priority remains the protection of Yoruba unity, peace, and progress,” the Alaafin declared.
The statement also noted that attempts to revive old rivalries between prominent royal stools, such as those of Oyo and Ile-Ife, were counterproductive and capable of sowing disunity at a time when collective leadership is most needed.
Traditional institutions, the Alaafin maintained, should focus on promoting development, fostering peace among communities, and offering guidance to political leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He further urged the media and commentators to avoid fueling divisions, stressing that the strength of the Yoruba people lies in unity and mutual respect among monarchs.
The clarification comes amid growing speculation of subtle rivalry between some leading Yoruba palaces following recent public events and comments attributed to insiders in the royal establishments.
Observers say the Alaafin’s statement could help calm rising tensions and redirect attention towards cultural preservation and socio-political stability across Yorubaland.
