President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred one of Nigeria’s highest national honours The Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Bill Gates, the renowned Microsoft co-founder and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The honour was officially presented on Tuesday in Lagos, during Bill Gates’ latest visit to Nigeria for a series of high-level discussions centered on public health, digital innovation, and development.
The event, rich in symbolism and significance, was attended by key dignitaries, including Nigerian billionaire and philanthropist Aliko Dangote, further highlighting the weight of the moment.
Gates’ trip reflects a deepening partnership between his foundation and Nigeria in the areas of primary healthcare reform, AI-driven development, and tech innovation. According to the Gates Foundation, his itinerary includes engagements with federal and state leaders, as well as meetings with local innovators, researchers, and youth changemakers.
One of the major highlights of his visit is the Goalkeepers Nigeria event, an initiative spotlighting Africa’s potential to lead global change, especially in the realm of health and sustainable development.
“This visit underscores our long-term commitment to supporting African solutions for African challenges,” the Foundation shared, noting its growing footprint across the continent with offices in Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Senegal, and Ethiopia.
Gates’ visit also comes on the heels of a landmark announcement made in May, where the Foundation pledged $200 billion over the next 20 years to support global health and development. This is part of Bill Gates’ broader commitment to donate the majority of his personal wealth to philanthropy.
With this recognition, Nigeria reaffirms its appreciation for long-standing partners who are championing innovation, health equity, and local impact at a global scale.
