Wike Makes Fresh Declaration on Governor Fubara – “He Is My Boy”

Port Harcourt, Nigeria – May 18, 2025

In a bold and revealing statement that has ignited fresh debate across Nigeria’s political landscape, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has referred to the current Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, as his “boy” and “son.”

The controversial declaration was made during an interview with BBC Pidgin, where Wike dismissed rumors of an ongoing battle between him and Governor Fubara, saying:

“That one is not a battle. He (Fubara) is my boy. He is my son. Why will I fight him?”

This comment has gone viral and triggered heated reactions, with many viewing it as a sign of continued godfatherism in Nigerian politics, while others believe it hints at a possible reconciliation.

Wike and Fubara, once close political allies, have been locked in a fierce power struggle since Fubara assumed office in 2023. Despite being handpicked by Wike as his successor, Fubara soon began resisting external control, leading to political chaos marked by mass resignations, impeachment threats, and legislative factionalism in Rivers State.

Tensions escalated so severely that President Bola Tinubu was forced to intervene in 2024 to prevent a full-scale political breakdown in the oil-rich state.

In the same interview, Wike accused unnamed individuals of fueling the crisis, suggesting that they were manipulating Fubara and trying to benefit from his political legacy without contributing to its foundation.

“Some people want to benefit where they didn’t sow. Now they are failing, they are crying,” he said.

This narrative positions Wike not as Fubara’s opponent, but as a betrayed mentor attempting to protect his political interests.

Wike’s remarks have been met with mixed reactions. Critics argue that his use of “my boy” to describe a democratically elected governor is demeaning and underscores the dangers of political godfatherism. Others interpret it as a strategic move—possibly aimed at signaling a truce or testing public sentiment.

Some Rivers State residents have expressed frustration, accusing both leaders of prioritizing personal power struggles over governance and development.

The fallout from Wike’s statement could further polarize Rivers State politics or pave the way for a potential reconciliation if both parties are willing to de-escalate the conflict. With the 2027 general elections in sight, the evolving dynamic between Wike and Fubara will remain one of the key storylines to watch.
