With the back-to-school season quickly approaching, one Toronto man recently set out on a mission to support families and children struggling to purchase supplies and groceries.
Lawrence Heights youth leader Trevaun Douglas is aiming to raise $25,000 for children in need of back-to-school supplies after completing a 46-hour walk to the U.S. side of Niagara Falls.
The community leader started his journey from Yorkdale Mall with a 25-pound weighted vest in hopes of raising enough money to cover the cost of backpacks, school supplies, shoes, haircuts, food, books, and grocery cards for the neighbourhood’s children.
“I would love to have one of the biggest back-to-school events in Lawrence Heights history, however, I will need all the help I can get,” Douglas wrote in his GoFundMe campaign.
Douglas began his walk on Aug. 10 with a group of friends and eventually reached Lake Shore by 4:45 a.m. It took the group roughly seven and a half hours to walk to Oakville, and 14 hours to reach Hamilton.
Unfortunately, the group ran into some unforeseen circumstances, and only one of Douglas’ friends, Pius, was able to complete the gruelling walk with him.
“The walk was a test of endurance, both physically and mentally,” Douglas wrote in an update under his campaign.
“Swelling in the knees, ankles, and hips, blisters on the feet, sleep deprivation, dehydration, heat, and even the mosquitoes and wildlife we encountered all made the journey much more challenging than anticipated.”

“As for how I’m feeling, my legs are definitely feeling the effects pretty much destroyed, but my upper body is holding up well,” Douglas wrote.
Back in May, Douglas set out on his first charity walk and raised over $2,500 to take mothers in the Lawrence Heights community out on a spa day for Mother’s Day.
The community leader has managed to raise over $7,000 for his back-to-school initiative, and is hoping to raise even more funds in the coming weeks.
“I’m very grateful to be able to get the privilege to help those in need and take one less load off their shoulders,” he said.
