We live in a world where social media is a big thing and if you are not on any social media, it seems you’re not in vogue or you’re too old fashioned.

But what is social media?

Media is the plural of medium, medium is a means of communication, like one would ask which medium would you prefer to send a message or information, it means which channel or option do you prefer the most.

Social media are the different channels and ways by which one can communicate with a person or a group of persons.

Few years ago, the media we had were fax, letter writing, telegraph, pigeons, television, radio etc

This could take months because there were human elements involved and human beings are largely imperfect, it could be delay, forgotten, or misplaced.

But with the social media, one can send a message from one part of the world and it would get to other different people in other parts of the world and in seconds it is delivered to them.

But like every good thing, when a purpose of a thing isn’t known, it would be mismanaged and abused and because communication has to do with dissemination of information which means alot to both the good and the bad.

Many people use social media as a hike or hub to carry out evil practices like fraudulent activities, impersonation, hacking, cyber crimes, catfishing, etc.

But as Christians how do we properly use the social media, social media is a tool and can be used for both good and evil depending on the heart of its user.

The scriptures tell us that “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks”

In other words, to know the fruits of a tree we need to check its roots, so first of all a Christian should guard their hearts and eyes, the eyes and ears are portals by which things get into the heart, what you read and hear has a lot to do with your values.

And we can protect this by the persons we allow into our space, how do you choose your Facebook friends and who to follow online, do you just allow anyone into your online space.

Next is to mind what you post, what you post has a way of attracting people who think in the same way you do, just like a police man dresses in a way that scares criminals and honey would always attract bees and flies. You have to be very mindful of what goes out of your social media handle.

This is a litmus test, before you post, ask yourself, is Jesus proud of what I’m about to post?

It’s a simple question but it has helped a lot of persons to be moderate with what they post online. You could use your social media to influence people to know more about God.

I promised myself that in every status I post everyday, one must be dedicated to telling someone about Christ, it could be a 30 second video, or a Bible quote or even a sermon.

Lastly, have people who you’re accountable to, there are times when the heat can get to us and we post things not pleasing to God unknowingly or probably in the heat of an argument, but some people would draw you back and tell you this is very wrong, delete this.

Sometimes it could be an app, my friend was telling me about an app that locks her social media by a certain time at night, sometimes you can program an app to let you off after 2 hours so that you don’t spend much time getting addicted to social media.

Because it can really be addictive sometimes and then you end up being unproductive because the time you would have spent doing something better, you spent it on social media.

But the social media is a place to get exposure, exposure to the right things, the right information, most people learn through the social media, YouTube, Facebook, WhatsApp, etc. There’s a tendency that you can learn a whole lot from social media especially when you have the right network of friends, they could teach you from their status, tips about business, life and relationship.

Thank God almost every church has their social media handle, you could watch videos of the sermons, and learn more about Christ as well, social media is a tool but its outcome depends on whose hands it falls into. Don’t let it be abused
