10 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

Before we talk about ways that we can improve our relationship with God, what really is a relationship

Relationship is the way in which two things are connected or related… The relationship between us and God was meant to be an intimate relationship, a family affair, a kingdom affair and a court affair but more importantly God wants to be close to us as much as we would be and many scriptures confirms this.

Draw close to God and he will draw close to you, when Adam sinned in the garden of Eden, God came in the cool of the evening to spend time him and that was when Adam found out that he himself was naked.So God said in his word that his spirit would no longer dwell with man (Gen 6:3) because man kept sinning continually and his wickedness became great

God was too holy to behold iniquity and God really wanted an intimate relationship with man so he had to send his son to become the bridge by which we would become close with him.The first way any man can become close to God and improve his relationship with God is to receive the life of God, become born again (John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes in him should not perish)

Without the spirit of God, everyone is doomed to perish, if that spirit that raised Christ dwells in you then it would quicken your mortal body, so it is the Spirit that gives life and there are two things to do to get born again.

‘Believe in your heart that Jesus the son of God died for your sin and rose to life that you might be risen with him then you confess with your lips that he is your Lord and saviour’ (Romans 10:9)

After you must have given your life to Christ, the next practical step is to read your Bible, get to know God for yourself, So Jesus told the Jews because you search the scriptures thinking that in them you would get eternal life but they testify of Christ (John 5:39) the scriptures testify of God, when you read the Bible, you read the letters of a loving father to his children

I once heard the story of a lady who saw a poet and didn’t really know him but after a conversation with that poet, she went and read all his poems and she loved him more because she could understand his writings better after she had met with him.You can know a man through his words, out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks or writes, a man who is full of love would write about love and a man whose heart is full of hatred, you can see the hate in his words.

Reading the Bible also helps us not just to be familiar with the ways of God but to know what he has written about us, his promises over his children, our inheritance in Christ, how he had been coming through for those before us.

The third way to improve our relationship with God is to meditate on his promises and words, God told Joshua to meditate on the book of the law handed to him, so that he might observe to do all that is in it, there are times when a man needs to meditate on what God has spoken to us via his word, we live in a world where many things seek our attention and want to be a distraction in our walk with God but the best way to stay with God is to meditate on what he has spoken.

Sometimes I wonder how Joseph and Daniel managed to live upright lives in a foreign land where they might not have had access to the law of the prophets, especially Joseph but I imagined that he meditated on what his father must have told him about God, that he was so sure that God will take them to the land that he swore to his grand fathers (Genesis 50:24) he kept on holding to that word until he was old.

It takes deep trust in God to believe like Joseph did and even as the three Hebrew boys in Babylon could believe that God was able to save them even in the face of the burning furnace.

David told us how he meditated on what God has done (psalms 143:5)

The fourth thing to do to have an overflowing relationship with God is prayer.

Prayer is simply communication with God, telling him what you think of him, communication is a way to have a relationship with someone, how do you claim to have a relationship with someone that you don’t talk with, how often do talk with God, prayer is used for many things but more often communication, have small talks with God.

Jesus at the tomb of Lazarus even though he had prayed still spoke with his father, and he told us that his father always hears him.

When he was on the cross and his father forsook him, he still prayed, men always ought to pray and not faint, we are called to a life of prayer, we must learn to converse with God and tell him about everything and anything.

Create out time to talk with God or you might just have small talks with him, tell him about your day, your failures, your flaws he wants to know it all, he knows but cast all your cares on him.

The fifth way to get to improve your relationship with God is fellowship.

The Bible says that we should not neglect the fellowship of the brethren, there is power when all that love God are united in a particular location, for where two or three are gathered in his name, he is there.

You know how most speakers and leaders encourage that we have quality family time, the father with his wife and children all together giving themselves quality time and enjoying quality conversation.

God didn’t want to just be close to you but he also wants to be close to all his creation, his children, no father wants to just be with a few and when we all are gathered in his name, there’s this beauty about fellowship that Paul made the prayer in 2 Cor 13:14 that the fellowship of the Holyspirit be with us all.

Also being in fellowship with God’s family can strengthen your faith and your relationship with God when you see others who have been in worse scenarios giving God the best of their lives, you would be inspired.

There are followers that would make you love God more, men like Ezra, Paul and Peter.

We pray that as you have an overflowing relationship with God, it flows over to others.

The sixth practical way to have an overflowing relationship with God is through service.

You serve God with your strength, your heart, your soul, your spirit, according to Gary Chapman’s five love languages, one of the ways to show your love to someone that you care about is your acts of service, find a way to show forth your love by serving God, remember how I said that the relationship with God can be seen as a kingdom affair where he is King and we are his servants, even though David was king he said that he would prefer to be a doorkeeper in the house of God when you truly love God you would want to serve his kingdom, you would want to see his kingdom expand, Jesus said while it is day, he must do the work of him that sent him(Jesus) to have an overflowing relationship with God, we must have a life of service, by serving God with our talents and gifts.

The seventh practical step on how to have an overflowing relationship with God is through worship.

Worship has been streamlined to be only songs in these time but it is not just songs,

Romans 12:1 present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and accepted unto the Lord, which is your spiritual worship.

The worship has to be about your entire body, your acts, thoughts, behavior, words are to be used as an expression to worship God, and to worship you must know the worth of a thing and honour it.

Christ has redeemed you with a price which he paid with his blood remember the first practical way, our response to what God has done to us and who he is is our worship Greater love has no man than this that he would lay down his life for his friends.

All that we do must bring him pleasure and glory that is how we worship him, so it could be through songs, through our words, through our acts etc.

But let every act that we do bring glory and honor to God.

The eighth practical way is evangelism, we must tell others about him, the way that others know that you’re in love with someone is that you always talk about him or her, how often do you talk to others about God.

If we don’t love our brothers and sisters that we see, how can we claim to love a God that we do not see, lovers of God preach the good tidings of God, they don’t close their eyes when they see men in sin.

Scriptures talks about how Paul when he was in the land of Athens saw how the people worship idols and his heart was broken that he was summoned to appear in Aeropagus, where people share their ideas so that he could tell them about this strange god that he spoke about, in those days it was okay to worship more than one god, the gods represented many things, fertility, fruitfulness, war, love, birth, beauty so they found it so hard to believe that there was a particular God who could do all things so it was a hard pill to swallow but Paul preached regardless

The ninth way to have an overflowing relationship with God is by loving others (1 John 4:7-8) we were told to love one another for God is love, we can show love to others by loving them as we love ourselves.

Giving to the needy and the poor, helping them to lessen the burden that they have, we were blessed to be a blessing, we must show love to our neighbors through our deeds and words.

Our words should carry grace when we speak, we must see others as God sees them, valuable enough to be sacrificed for.

He gave himself as ransom for all, love is how people should know us, christians never leave any wounded man behind ( pun intended)

The last way to have an overflowing relationship with God is to do his command and obey his words, whatever he says we should do, we should do.

A time came when all the disciples of Jesus left him and when he asked Peter why he never left, Peter said “you alone have the words of eternal life”

No body else has your best interest more than God, for he said that “he knows the plans he has for us, plans of welfare and not of evil to give us an expected end”

He wishes above all things that you may prosper and be in health even as your soul prospers.

No one care more about a creation more than its creator so if he gives you a command, know that it is in your best interest.

For God called Abraham, a friend because he knew Abraham could command his household after the Lord.

Abraham obeyed God’s command to kill his son even when he never understood what it meant.

When we get to the place that we are willing to pay down our lives at his word then we have become family.

These ten practical ways are the ways that one can have an overflowing relationship with God, practice then daily and see growth
