The state of North Carolina has officially designated June 14, 2025, as ‘Igbo Day’, recognising the cultural heritage and civic contributions of the Igbo people in the state.

Governor Josh Stein made the declaration through a formal proclamation shared on the North Carolina government website, acknowledging the presence and impact of the Igbo community, an ethnic group originating from southeastern Nigeria, who have lived in the state for more than 50 years.

Fourth U.S. State to Recognise a Nigerian Ethnic Group

With this move, North Carolina becomes the fourth American state to formally recognise a Nigerian ethnic group with a designated day. It follows Minnesota, which declared Igbo Day in August 2022, and New York and Texas, which recognised Yoruba Day in 2016 and YorubaFest Day in 2022, respectively.

According to Governor Stein’s statement, the Igbos have significantly influenced North Carolina’s social, educational, and economic landscape.

“For over 50 years, the Igbos have contributed to education, medicine, law, information technology, and the arts,” the statement noted.

The governor also praised the community’s dedication to civic engagement, volunteerism, and preserving their cultural identity while participating actively in American public life.

“The Igbo community aspires to create an environment where their members thrive, traditions flourish, and their contributions to society are recognised and valued,” the proclamation reads.

Igbo Day Festival: A Platform for Cultural Expression

The announcement also acknowledged the role of the Igbo Day Festival Organisation, a cultural group founded in 2022. The group held its first public celebration on July 10 of that year, showcasing Igbo music, language, dance, and art with the aim of strengthening cultural pride and intergenerational identity among Igbo descendants in North Carolina.

The festival is seen by organisers as a response to the quiet erasure that immigrant communities sometimes face. A way to hold space for culture even while adapting to American life.

Community Involvement and Civic Presence

Governor Stein’s statement described the Igbo community as active in various sectors, including public service, small business, healthcare, education, and tech. Members have reportedly volunteered in schools, participated in food drives, supported local women’s shelters, and taken part in community festivals and cultural events.

Beyond professional achievements, the Igbos in North Carolina have shown steady involvement in political life and charitable causes, the proclamation notes.

“They have adopted highways for clean-up projects, participated in elections, and contributed meaningfully to the state’s cultural diversity and social cohesion.”

A Step Toward Broader Cultural Recognition?

While this declaration may seem symbolic, it reflects a slow but growing trend of U.S. states acknowledging the unique contributions of African ethnic groups within the broader diaspora narrative.

The recognition comes at a time when Nigerian-American communities are gaining visibility in politics, business, academia, and the arts. For some, this kind of official acknowledgement signals a shift toward more inclusive cultural representation.

Conclusion

North Carolina’s move to declare June 14 as Igbo Day marks a notable moment for Nigerian immigrants and their descendants in the U.S.

While it does not change policy or guarantee support, it does offer visibility and for many, that’s a long-overdue nod.

Whether this leads to broader institutional support or remains a symbolic gesture remains to be seen, but for now, one of Nigeria’s most prominent ethnic groups has earned a permanent spot on the American calendar, at least in North Carolina.

So yes, Naija to the world isn’t just a Twitter phrase anymore. It’s on official U.S. calendars now.
