Web security and privacy is a myth, however, your data and privacy are safer in the hands of genuine people you willingly and intentionally give them away to.

Hence your safety in the webspace is crucial, as so many upheaval activities can be carried out if your ID’s and passwords find their way into the wrong hands.

The consequences of those activities might be direct or indirect.

According to Kevin Mitnick, nicknamed The Condor or The Darkside Hacker. He is currently a world-famous American computer Security Consultant and ex-convict, Convicted for hacking.

In an interrogation session, he revealed that his highest hacking breakthrough came from social engineering he seldom used technology to gain information of his victims or potential victims.

Another study by British psychologists shows that people often base their passwords on something obvious and easily guessed by a social engineer.

About 50% of computer users based their passwords on the name of a family member, partner, pets the list goes on.

30% use a pop idol or a sporting hero.

Another 10% of users choose passwords with a hint of fantasy.

The final 10% squarely follow all the rules of impeccable passwords using cryptic combinations.

Careless data dumps by third parties and contractors.

*Strengthening Weak Passwords*

Length: a lengthy password doesn’t guarantee a strong password. However, it is advisable to keep the password length range within the number of six to eight characters unique to the web platform involved.

Composition: Composition is the core of password strengthening, if your composition is right, your password will be Impeccable.

Your intended password should contain a mixture of;

Alphabetic numeric, special characters for instance. It should be something you can memorise, but not easily guessed.

A mixture of upper and lower cases characters.

Composition *Don’ts*

Do not use stand-alone dictionary words as passwords.

Do not use personal information such as family member name, pet name, date of birth, phone number etcetera.

Do not use pieces of information that are easily obtained from the user ID as passwords.

Do not use banal proper names such as local sports, teams, celebrities etcetera.

Do not use patterns such as; 1235.., qwerty, abcde. . . etcetera.

Do not reuse old passwords.

Do not give away your ID’s, log in details or any private information over a phone call, email even unverified sites.

Do not use the same password for all your online accounts.
